USTC was established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing in September, 1958, which was hailed as "a major event in the history of Chinese science and education". In the early 1970s, the University was moved to Hefei, the capital city of Anhui province.

Established 1958, University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) is affiliated to Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS, which has 110 research institutes all over China). USTC students can do research in CAS institutes, and scientists from CAS institutes teach courses, deliver lectures and seminars, supervise graduate students in USTC.


USTC has 13 schools, as School of Mathematics, School of Physical Sciences, School of Life Sciences, School of Chemistry & Materials Science, School of Information Science & Technology, School of Engineering, School of Earth & Space Science, School of Computer Science and Technology, School of Management, School of Humanities & Social Sciences, School of Nuclear Science & Technology, School of Public Affairs and School of Gifted Youth.


USTC has 1448 full-time faculty, among whom 32 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and 450 are full professors. Of 15,500 students on campus, 1900 are doctoral students, 6200 are master's students, and 7,400 are undergraduate students.


USTC is the only university in China that has 2 national laboratories: National Synchrotron Laboratory and Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Mirco-scale.


On average, 70% of USTC graduates pursue further study, receiving a master's or doctoral degree and one out of 1000 graduates was elected CAS or CAE academician, which ranks among the top few of Chinese universities.


Thomson Reuters published the “TOP 100 CHEMISTS, 2000-2010” based on the impact indicators of the journal papers in the past 10 years. There were a total of 12 ethnic Chinese listed, among whom there were 6 USTC alumni.


Success rate of research proposals to NSF of China exceeds 45%, the highest among the Chinese universities. Citation counts per faculty at USTC in the past ten years are 9.3, the highest among China universities.
