Introduction of Shanghai University of Political Science and Law

Shanghai University of Political Science and Law (SHUPL) was established in 1984, SHUPL is situated in the well-known Sheshan Mountain scenic area, and it covers an area of 1078.6 mu (about 72 hectares).

SHUPL features practicality and application. It educates personnel of various disciplines at multiple levels. Guided by a scientific development outlook, SHUPL is becoming a high-level liberal arts university with distinctive features and producing intellectuals with practical skills. The university now has 12 academic schools, and other teaching departments include the Graduate School, Department of Physical Education, Network and Modern Education Technology Center, and Vocational Training Center. SHUPL has started graduate programs. The university now offers 3 master’s degree programs including legal theories, constitution and administrative law studies and criminal law studies. The university also offers 25 undergraduate programs and 7 higher vocational degree programs.

There are more than 10600 full-time students in the university. SHUPL has an outstanding faculty, 40% of its faculty members are above associate professor level. Over 84% of its faculty members are masters or even doctors. Eight of its faculty members are qualified supervisors for doctorate candidates, over 48 of its faculty members are qualified supervisors for master candidates. Many of SHUPL’s faculty members play a leading role in national academic organizations. Mr. Liu Yungeng, former chairperson and party secretary of the Shanghai NPC standing committee, is the honorary president of SHUPL. The university has also invited over 100 well-known specialists and scholars to serve as honorary professors and guest professors.

SHUPL enjoys advanced and adequate teaching facilities which include training classrooms for Mock UN, International Politics and Public Affairs, International Strategic Security Database, computing center, language labs, simulated trial courtrooms, criminal investigation labs, international trade labs and short hand training classroom. Ever since 1999, the university has been awarded Shanghai Garden Unit every year. It has also been the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Shanghai Model Unit. In 2009, SHUPL was awarded Shanghai Outstanding Unit for Cultural and Ideological Construction.

SHUPL attaches great importance to international exchanges. It has established exchange relations with many institutions and universities from countries and regions like the United States, France, Japan and Hong Kong.

Applicant Eligibility Requirements

1. UNDERGRADUATE APPLICANTS: Aged between 18 to 30 years with a High School Certificate or above and good GPA.
2. MASTERS APPLICANTS: Aged under 45 years and with a Bachelor’s degree or above.
3. PREPARATORY CHINESE LANGUAGE STUDENTS: Aged between 18 to 28 years with a High School Certificate or above and good GPA.
4. SENIOR VISITING STUDENTS: Aged above 18years with a bachelor’s degree.

Application starts from January 1st to June 30th

How To Apply

  1. Download the Admission Application Form for International Students from our webpage.
  2. Please complete all sections on the Application Form and email it with other required materials as an attachment to shupl@admissions.cn; or send the completed Application materials via mail to:

  3. School of International Communication and Exchange will process all applications and will mail the Admission Letter and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW202) to the admitted students after confirmation with applicants by email or call.
  4. Please take the Admission Letter, JW202, Health Examination Certificates and other related materials to apply for Student Visa (X Visa) at the Chinese Embassy in your countries, and register on time and pay the required fees.

Required Documents

  1. A completed International Students Admission Application Form to Study at SHUPL.
  2. Notarization of your highest awarded certificate. If applicants are students, they should provide this certificate(s) from their University. Texts which are not in Chinese or English must be translated into either Chinese or English and Notarized accordingly before submission.
  3. Official transcript. Texts which are not in Chinese or English must be translated into either Chinese or English and Notarized accordingly before submission.
  4. A study or research plan. The Study or research plan in China should not be less than 1000 characters, either in Chinese or English.
  5. One photocopy of HSK4 or above Certificate (These are only required of applicants for undergraduate and graduate programs; applicants without such certificates are required to take one-year preparatory Chinese program.)
  6. One photocopy of your passport page.
  7. Eight passport size photos.
  8. Applicants for Master program need to provide two recommendation letters, either in Chinese or in English at least by Associate Professors.

Scholarships

Shanghai Government Scholarship

1. The types of scholarship and application

Shanghai government scholarship for International students has two types: Type A and Type B.

2. Scholarship standards

1) Type A Scholarship (full scholarship): covering fees of tuition, Expenses of accommodation, Monthly living allowance, Comprehensive medical treatment insurance premium.

2)Type B Scholarship (partial scholarship):Free of fees of tuition, Comprehensive medical treatment insurance premium.

3. Language requirements

The applicant's language level ought to be HSK4 or above (HSK Certificate is needed)

4. Degree and age requirements

1) Undergraduate applicants: Aged under 25 years, with a High School Certificate or above.

2) Master applicants: Aged under 35 years, with a Bachelor’s degree or above.

3) Preparatory Chinese language applicants: Aged under 23 years, with a High School Certificate or above.

Tuition and Fee

For International Students:

  1. Application fee: 400 RMB
  2. Tuition:

    1) Chinese Language: 10000 RMB/ academic year
    2) Undergraduate program: 21500 RMB/ academic year
    3) Postgraduate program: 23000 RMB/ academic year

  3. Accommodation: Double room 8000 RMB/ academic year; Single room 12000 RMB/ academic year.
  4. The insurance premium: 800 RMB/ academic year
