Introduction

Subordinate to the Ministry of Education of China, Shanghai Foreign Language School affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University(SFLS) is a boarding secondary school. Its students are distributed between grade 6 to grade 12. SFLS is an integrated secondary school located in Shanghai. English, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish, altogether six languages are taught in the school. It is the school in which offers the largest number of foreign languages.

The educational philosophy of the school is to prepare its students to become well-rounded international talents with foreign language specialty, and a knowledge of art and science subjects. The majority of the graduates have entered first-ranked universities such as Beijing University, Fudan University, Harvard University, Yale University, Waseda University and Kyoto University. Yang Jie Chi, the Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Wang Guang Ya, the Chinese Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs both graduated from this school. The school enjoys the reputation of the cradle of foreign language and diplomatic experts.

• Flexible Multi-cultural Courses
  In the junior department offers Mandarin courses for the students who have achieved a certain Mandarin level. The senior students enter Chinese classes, American classes and Japanese classes according to their university preferences.
  
• Diverse Opportunities for Multiple Language and Artistic Experience
  Apart from compulsory Mandarin and English courses, students may take optional courses such as French, German, Japanese, Erhu (Chinese traditional musical instruments) and traditional Chinese calligraphy course. Regular Mandarin and English speech practices, International Week (Mandarin/English), International Voice (English) and home stay in local residents’ homes offer many opportunities to practice their language. Students have opportunities to go to English speaking countries for short-term study, and to visit other schools so that they can practice their foreign languages and experience foreign cultures.

  In the International Department there is a lot of senior experienced teachers, a large number of bilingual and multilingual young teachers and professional foreign teachers. In this department every class has two class teachers, one is Chinese, and the other is a foreign teacher. Both of them monitor students’ study and take care of their daily lives. The class teachers often communicate with students and their parents in order to ensure their physical and mental health.
