Zhejiang Yuexiu University Of Foreign Languages grows out of Shaoxing Yuexiu Foreign Languages School, which was founded in 1981 by Mr. Shao Hongshu, the nephew of Shao Lizi (Shao Lizi is renowned in Chinese history as the "Peaceful Senior"). Mr. Wei Fengjiang, the only Chinese student of the famous Indian poet Tagore, was the first president of the college. In December 1999, the school was authorized to be upgraded into a three-year college.
In May 2001, the college was approved by the Provincial Government of Zhejiang and became the only full-time foreign languages college of vocational education. Located in Shaoxing, a famous cultural city with a long history, Yuexiu occupies an area of 106.9 acres and the construction areas of which is 210,000 square meters. The school library has a total of 710,000 books, a modern electronic book system and a system of computer net service. There are 389 full-time teachers, among whom 118 teachers have the academic title as high as or even higher than that of associated professor, which accounts 30.33% of all the full-time teachers. There are 2 doctoral advisors, who receive the special subsidies from the government. 121 teachers have master's degrees or even above that, which accounts 31.11% of the staff team. In addition, the college employs more than 40 foreign teachers from 14 countries. The number of the full-time students is over 7,000. The college has 8 foreign languages-English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Arabic, and has over 20 majors related to foreign languages.
