About City

Panzhihua, the only city named after a flower in China, is located at the junction of southwest of Sichuan province and northwest of Yunnan province, where the Jinsha and the Yalong rivers converge. The G5 highway runs through the city, which is 620 kilometers south of Chengdu, and 280 kilometers north of Kunming. Panzhihua contains three districts and two counties, covering an area of 7,434 square kilometers.

Panzhihua has a mixed south subtropical and north temperate climate. The annual average temperature is 20 degree centigrade, with annually 2700 hours of sunshine, about 800 millimeters annual rainfall and a 300-day of frost-free period. Panzhihua has earned the nickname "sunshine city" for its unique climate with blue skies and white clouds and also brilliant sunshine year round.

Panzhihua is known as "the world's richest cornucopia", because many rare and precious minerals were given to this land by the Creator. Mr. Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China's reform and opening up, once commented "this land is richly endowed by nature". At present, it has developed into an important base of iron, steel, vanadium, titanium, energy and chemical engineering in western China. A wide range of biological resources exist in Panzhihua. Two hundred sixty-four species of animals multiply and live here, including 19 species of rare, protected state animals. Named the "living fossil of rare plants" by biologists, Panzhihua cycads are the only annual flowering cycad species in the world. With a large growth here, the cycad has reached 23 million, being called “Three treasures of Ba-shu” along with the dinosaurs and Panda.

Situated in the foot hills and on the river banks, Panzhihua boasts the reputation of “Bridge Museum” for its various bridges with exotic shapes and unique characteristics. It has nearly 100 existing permanent bridges, eight of which fly over the 50 kilometer section of the Jinsha River running through the city. Ertan Hydropower Station is built on the main stream of the Yalong River within the boundaries of Panzhihua city, which is 46 kilometers away from downtown. It was China's largest hydropower station built in 20th century.

The tourism resources are rich and colorful in Panzhihua city with their rich content and unique features. Here the natural landscapes of Tiankengdilou, Gaoxiapinghu, Sunshine Hot Spring and Karst Cave coexist and bring out the best in each other. The grand third-front industrial civilization with its compact layout is mysterious and outstanding. The cultural landscape combines amorous feelings of Sichuan and Yunnan styles and has local ethnic characteristics. As an important stop on the route between Shangri-la and other scenic spots including Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, Lugu Lake, Panzhihua is a shortcut to these major scenic spots.
