Nanjing University of Posts & Telecommunications(NUPT)

Is a multi-layer university with the well-coordinated development which takes the Engineering, Science and Management as its dominance and Electronics and Telecommunications as its characteristics, has multi-disciplines categories namely Engineering, Science, Arts, Economics, Management and Education for bachelor degree, master degree and doctor degree education.

NUPT has four campuses which are Sanpailou Campus, Xianlin Campus, Xiaohang Campus and Wujiang Campus. It covers area of 3003.6 mu. At present we have 10 Colleges (which are College of Economics & Management, College of Telecommunications & Information Engineering, College of Computer, College of Optoelectronic Engineering, College of Automation,College of Mathematics & Physics, College of Communications & Media Technology, College of Continued Education, College of Applied Technology and Wu Jiang vocational Technology College); 2 departments (which are Foreign Language Department and Social Science Department); 4 Science Research Institutes (on Optical Fiber communication, Information Network Technology, Image Processsing and Image communication and Signal & Information processing); Postgraduate School and Physical Education Department. NUPT has 5 majors and specialties for doctor degree, 18 majors and specialties for master segree and 32 specialties for bachelor degree. At present there are more than 20,000 students studying in the university.

Equipped with teaching staff whose level of teaching is fairly high and who can conduct scientific researches with considerable efficiency, our university has more than 1,400 staffs, among which there are 800 full-time teachers and science reseachers, with professors, associate professors totaling nearly 400 and more than 500 lecturers & engineers as well.

NUPT has very good relationship with the universities, companies and international organizations in US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, Russia, Thailand, ASEAN and some other counties. And our university has established scientific cooperation and exchange links. In recent years, NUPT has held various symposiums and workshops and training classes as well. Our university has been one of the training bases of Asia-Pacific Telecommunity in China for more than 10 years since 1994.

PROFIL OF NUPT

Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunciations has had a glorious tradition and long history of 63 years. The forerunner was the Cadre Training Class founded by the Field Post Office Bureau at the Anti-Japanese Base in Shangdong Province in 1942. It was the cradle for our Party and Army to train telecommunication technicians in early times. In 1958, the training school was rebuilt for high education and renamed as Nanjing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications which was one of the key universities under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (changed as the Ministry of Information Industry since March, 1999). Since February 2000, the state and local government jointly develop NUPT and our school is now mainly administered by the Government of Jiangsu Province.In April 2005, our school renamed as Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications at the approval of Education Ministry and the provincial government.

NUPT is one of the universities that are approved by the State Council to award bachelor degree and master degree and in nineties for doctor degree. The specialties covered the main fields of Electronic Information Technology and has formed comparatively complete information technology specialties group. The school has advanced teaching and researching facilities and is one of the few universities which have the ability to train technicians in information technology systematically in large scale.

Library on Xianlin Campus

Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunciations has good facilities for teaching, science researching, physical education and living. The permanent assets is up to 870 million Yuan RMB including the assets for teaching and science research equipment up to 160 million Yuan RMB. NUPT now has 44 labs, 13,000 sets of major equipments, 267 sets of good-sized equipments and apparatus. NUPT has 6 key majors and 11 key labs approved by Jiangsu Province and the Ministry of Information Industry. The school has an advanced wide-band and high-speed network built by kilomega fibers and connected with the Internet by Cernet and Chinanet, which provides teaching and science research with good conditions. Contemporary Education Technology Centre provides electrical education, CAI and education on the net with modern facilities. There are about 900,000 volumes of books in the library, and our school is one of the universities in our country who have the most volumes of books, journals and magzines on Information, Communications, Electrics and Computer. The library has the network connected with our school's campus network which arrives at the advanced level in our country.

Now NUPT has more than 20,000 students, of which 116 are Ph.D.students, 3102 are postgraduate students, 13979 are undergraduates, 1916 are technical college students, 6000 are students from the Continued Education College.

DIATHESIS EDUCATION

NUPT always puts the working emphasis on enhancing teaching quality, insists teaching reforming, strengthens diathesis education to adapt to the development of high-tech, information industry and domestic economy. In recent years, NUPT students have performed well and got excellent achievements in many provincial, national and international competition on Electronic Design, Mathematics Modeling, Physics, English and Robots. For instance: for many years, the number of winners of our university has ranked top in provincial undergraduate physics and mathematics contests; NUPT students have won for many years in national undergraduate electronic design contest and national high-institute mathematics modeling contests; NUPT students got championship in 2004 national undergraduate robots contest; NUPT students won 1 first prize and 2 second prizes in 2004 international undergraduate MCM and ICM contests. These achievements are outstanding in the universities in China.

To encourage more students to get outstanding achievements, NUPT has set up scholarships for freshmen, excellent students and enterprise scholarship offered by Fujitsu Company, Changfei company,Huawei Company,Tongding Company and China Mobile Communication Corporation. 50% of the students have opportunity to get the scholarship. Excellent student source and high quality instruction have won good reputation for NUPT. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates come up to 100%, the enrollment rate for master degree study ranks top among the universities and institutes in China.

NUPT staff has strong science research ability and got many high-level achievements of which the scale was in the top 100 of more than 1000 universities in China in 1990s. In recent 20 years, 260 science projects of our university have been appraised by country, province or ministry and many are in the lead in China, some are even in the lead in the whole world. Now nearly 300 science projects are on going and have won nearly 100 prizes from country, province or ministry. The science researches are active and have advantages in the fields of optical fiber wide-band multiplex transmission, signal and information processing, program control, image communications, computer application, management information system, circuit theory and applied mathematics. There are more than 80 academic, science and technology monographs and translations, about 2000 disquisitions published in recent years (there were 394 disquisitions published in domestic and oversea academic publications from 1999 to 2000), and of which nearly 100 have been chosen and included in the three big search engines, SCI, IE and ISTP.

The Nature Science page of NUPT Gazette is one of the four core periodicals on communications and electronics in China and was granted “excellent university nature science periodical” by China Education Committee and “Excellent Periodical” by Ministry of Information Industry and Jiangsu Province. There are more than 210 staff members going abroad to visit or attend international academic conferences in recent years. NUPT is one of the three training bases of Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) in China and has conducted 17 advanced training courses for telecommunication technicians from nearly 20 countries in Asia-Pacific area from 1990 to 2004.
