Growth of Overseas Students in China with Scholarship Increased by 10% in 2012

On the morning of March 21, the 2013 conference of China's government scholarship for overseas students held at the China Pharmaceutical University. The reporter learnt from the conference that, the China Scholarship Council (CSC) has sponsored altogether 60,024 students from both domestic and overseas during 2012, among whom 28,768 awardees were international students from 184 countries, an increase by 11.9% over 2011 and an account for 8.76% of the total number of overseas students in China in 2012.

Based on the agreements or the plans between the Chinese government and foreign governments or organizations, the Chinese government scholarship is administered by the Ministry of Education, and the China Scholarship Councilis commissioned to be in charge of the management of the enrollment and daily routines of the foreign students who study in China sponsored by the Chinese government scholarship (i.e. the awardees).

So far, in China, there are altogether 229 universities and colleges with the government scholarship and 130 of them have established courses taught in English for overseas students, among which the majority of the courses taught in English are for Master degree. The year of 2012 witnessed the first cooperation between the China Scholarship Council and foreign enterprises. Currently, there are 5 domestic and foreign enterprises joined the scholarship for overseas students in China.

Secretary-General Mrs. Liu Jinghui of the CSC, said, in recent years, the process management of the overseas students in China with the sponsorship of the scholarship has been improved. Specially-assigned people are responsible for the students with special backgrounds and provide specific attention and services for their study and life so that the rate of quality of annual review maintains around 98.6%. By 2015, the number of overseas students sponsored by the Chinese government scholarship will be expected to reach approximately 50 thousand.
