On October 14, 2011, an Award Ceremony for the Second Chinese Character Calligraphy Competition was held by the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury (CIUC) in CIUC's Seminar Room. The competition was divided into categories: hard-pen calligraphy and brush-pen calligraphy. Participants are mainly from CIUC's calligraphy class and all programs of the University of Canterbury. For each category, one first price, two second prices and three third prices were selected. Ms Susan Bouterey, Acting Director of CIUC, and Prof Hu Hong, Deputy Director, presented the awards to the winners and participants, encouraging them to continue their efforts in calligraphy learning and making it as a channel to further understanding of Chinese culture. Chinese character calligraphy class is one of the major programs in the Chinese Corner under the name of "Chinese Tea House" at CIUC. The calligraphy class has attracted numerous Chinese culture lovers both on campus and off campus. The competition has been successfully held twice since the establishment of the Tea House. Chinese calligraphy demonstration is also a regular program in various cultural occasions, for example the University's Open Day and the Multi-culture Day in various areas in the South Island of New Zealand. The scene of CI staff writing Chinese names for local visitors in the form of Chinese calligraphy is always a spectacular sight. The amazing Chinese calligraphy impressed not only the participants of the Chinese calligraphy class, but also the general public. Many people say that they have obtained a better understanding of Chinese culture and art through calligraphy.
