A gathering was held on Saturday to mark the 110th anniversary of the founding of Shandong University, one of China's oldest and prestigious universities.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the top legislature, wrote a congratulatory letter to the university.

In the letter, Wu called on the university to make greater contribution to China's modernization drive, according to a statement from the university.

Located in Ji'nan, the provincial capital of east China's Shandong Province, the university is the second national university established in China and now offers courses in 11 main academic disciplines.
