Ancient Indian university to hold board meeting in China2011-10-11 14:52:00 From: Xinhua
A historic Indian university will hold its governing board meeting in Beijing this week, the Foreign Ministry said.
The governing board of Nalanda University, led by Professor Amartya Sen, will hold its meeting in Beijing and visit the ancient capital of Xi'an in northwest China from Oct. 11 to 15 at the invitation of China, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said at a daily press briefing on Monday. Located in the Indian state of Bihar, Nalanda University was a Buddhist center of learning from the fifth century to the 12th century, when it was ransacked and destroyed. The Chinese pilgrim-monk Xuanzang of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) studied there. "The proposal to reestablish Nalanda University is one of the key projects of the East Asia Summit," Liu said. Premier Wen Jiabao said China would donate 1 million U.S. dollars for the restoration of the university when he visited India last year. Wen also invited the governing board of the university to hold its meeting in China. Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun will meet with the delegation during its visit, Liu said. Total:1 Page: 1
