Art lover hunting for affordable treasures in Shanghai2011-9-19 14:57:00 From: xinhua
At the ongoing Shanghai Art Fair, visitors can really find a good bargain. Most of the exhibits have discounts from ten to fifty percent off. Art lovers and traders will find the trip here is like "Hunting for Affordable Treasures." The collective display by thirteen galleries from the United States have attracted quite a few visitors. This is the first time such a large scale group from the US has attended the Shanghai Art Fair. But due to their high prices or surreal style, few deals have been made thus far. Compared to the high brow US exhibits that are beyond the reach of many patrons, the middle or low prices at South Korean galleries are delighting most visitors. And they are even willing to bargain. A S.Korean art dealer said, "We can negotiate as to the price. As long as it's not too ridiculous." Galleries from France are also luring patrons with flexible price tags. A French art dealer said, "We can offer discounts as large as fifty percent. But it depends on the type of art work."
Mr. Xue is a frequenter to the art fair. He has some tips on how to bargain here and has earned a lot by investing in the art works he finds at the fair. Mr. Xue said, "Last year I bought a painting: the price was 180-thousand, and I got it for 40-thousand. It was really a good bargain." Insiders say dealers are motivated to offer most discounts on the last day of the fair, which falls on Sunday. So chances are one can dig up a big treasure at quite a reasonable price.
