Largest Qiantang tides wow tourists

The Qiantang tidal bore has surged down the river in eastern China, peaking just in time for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In a magnificent display of nature, the Qiantang River tides in east China attracts tourists from all over the country. This year's tides are apparently the largest in nine years, and the full moon and incredible tidal bores have created a perfect Mid-Autumn combination.

Night tides can bring a special sensation. You can't really see the tide clearly, but the darkness allows people to use their imaginations while hearing the roar of the water. The sounds of the surging tide have been described as like thunder in a storm, or the hoofs of a thousand horses.

Roaring waves surge forward along the Qiantang River in Jiaxing City, east China's Zhejiang Province, Sept. 13, 2011. Tens of thousands of tourists have gathered in Jiangxing, one of the best tide-watching places, to watch the magnificent tidal bore. The tidal bore, an annual spectacular sight since ancient times, is known in the world for its roaring tides.The natural wonder has become a popular attraction for tourists across the globe.
