Confucius Institute at Leiden University and Dutch Middle Schools Make Joint Efforts to Start "Chinese Class in Middle School" Programme

Over three years, Confucius Institute at Leiden University has actively promoted and launched HSK tests and Chinese language teaching in Netherlands. These endeavors been highly approved of and spoken highly of by all quarters of society, Dutch middle school principals responding positively in particular. With the support and assistance of the Education Section of the Chinese Embassy in Netherlands, Dutch middle schools have been active in building partnerships with the Confucius Institute, with the necessity and feasibility of developing Chinese language teaching program in middle schools being taken into consideration.

On June 14th, 2011 and August 19th, 2011, on behalf of the Confucius Institute at Leiden University, the Dutch Director Professor R.P.E.Sybesma made cooperative agreements on the development of Chinese language classrooms with Principal of Preparatory Middle School of Rotterdam City College in Netherlands Mr. Willem Vonk and Principal of Visser't Hooft Lyceum Ms. Petra F. Verhoeckx.

In the process of signing the agreements, both parties involved made friendly exchanges regarding cooperation in developing Chinese courses in Dutch middle schools and the sustainable development of Chinese teaching in Dutch middle schools etc. They reached a common consensus in many areas. The two principals of Dutch middle schools both showed positive attitude towards the development of Chinese language teaching program. The provision of Dutch middle school students with Chinese courses may expand Holland's youths' path of professional development and improve their competence in communicating internationally. They hope to cooperate with the Confucius Institute at Leiden University, with the profound Chinese teaching and Chinese studies of Leiden University as a basis of making joint efforts in developing Chinese language programs in middle schools and laying the foundation for the sustainable development of the program.

Professor R.P.E.Sybesma said that Confucius Institute at Leiden University would continue to build its partnership with the middle schools willing to launch Chinese courses and that it will spare no effort in supporting Chinese teaching programs in Holland. Meanwhile, the Chinese language teaching program is included in the annual plans of the Confucius Institute for overall arrangements. The Confucius Institute will cooperate with Dutch middle schools to build Chinese language teaching programs and make joint efforts to set the stage for the development of Chinese language teaching.
