Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University Observes the Grand Opening of a Special Lecture on Chinese Philosophical Thought2011-8-31 11:29:00 From: Hanban
Bangkok, August 14th, 2011--The Special Lecture of Chinese Philosophical Thought "One of the Chinese Style Souls--Four Seasons of the Soul" conducted by Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University was held in the conference hall on the ninth floor of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Building at Chulalongkorn University. Professor Wang Bo from Department of Philosophy at Peking University and Director of Confucianism Research Institute at Peking University gave the lecture. Over 500 guests including Vice-president of Chulalongkorn University M.R. Kalaya Tingsabadh, Dean of College of Arts at Chulalongkorn University, Thai and Chinese Directors of Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University, the teachers and students from departments of Chinese language and literature of various colleges and universities in Thailand, the teachers and students from Confucius Institute and the guests from Malaysia and Singapore etc. attended the special lecture.
Based on Chinese traditions, Professor Wang Bo selected "Confucianism", "Mohism", "Taoism" and "Legalism" from the hundred schools of thought of China's Spring and Autumn Period as key subjects for analysis during his lecture. The lecture's themes were those of love and tolerance, and Professor Wang Bo adopted an original approach by comparing the philosophical thoughts of "Confucianism", "Mohism", "Taoism" and "Legalism" to "Spring", "Summer", "Autumn" and "Winter" in nature. Souls with Chinese Style: Confucianism brings is warmth, was a philosophical exploration of love and its logical extension of blood ties; Mohism is a philosophy advocating the superseding of inequality within love with a kind of universal love; whilst Taoist thought regards tolerance as the most important attitude in approaching life whilst it also advocates adherence to the natural law of inaction; finally, Professor Wang spoke on life and the soul from the perspective of Legalism and of its principles of utilitarianism. Professor Wang Bo's wonderful speech was simple but profound and was met by rounds of applause from the audience. The lecture spread Chinese philosophical thought widely. After the lecture, Professor Wang Bo answered the questions raised by the audience with humorous responses. The wonderful lecture concluded to the sound of loud applause from the audience. All those in attendance said that they had gained a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese philosophical thought and a profound experience of Chinese styles of thinking as a result of the lecture. This Special Lecture on Chinese Philosophical Thought held through the joint efforts of Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University, Moral Uplifting Society and College of Humanities at Thammasat University was also in aid of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Chee Chin Khor Moral Uplifting Society, a famous charity organization.
