Honder University, a Chinese institution of higher learning, has set aside 10 scholarships for Ghanaians who apply to study in that school next year. Included in the area of study is Petro-Chemical Engineering. The school has also initiated moves to establish an office in Ghana through which Ghanaians could apply directly to study in the university. At a press conference in Accra yesterday to announce its foray into Ghana, the President of the University, Prof. Bruce Zhou Yu Shu, declared the intention of the university to promote a cultural exchange programme between Ghanaian universities and the institution. Under the programme, he said, teachers of the English Language in Ghana would be sent to China to teach the subject, while teachers of Chinese from that country would be transferred to teach Chinese in Ghanaian universities. Flanked by Prof. Fidel Panou and Prof. Shirley Shi, Prof. Shu said enormous opportunities existed for English teachers in China and added that applicants could attend the university and work as instructors in the language as well and encouraged Ghanaians to apply. Prof. Shu said China had developed from a third world country to the second largest economy in the world in 30 years because of the huge investments it made in quality education and added that the country wanted to share its first-class educational facilities with Ghanaians. That, he said, was part of the country's contribution to Ghana's development. "If you want to see the most modern and most sophisticated infrastructure in the world, come to China. If you want to attend the best universities in the world, apply to Chinese universities," he said. To apply to study in the university, he said one had to undergo medical examination and acquire a police clearance document which showed that the applicant had no criminal record. Prof. Panou, for his part, said the university wanted to explore how to help Ghana develop through quality education. Honder University, is situated in the Inner Mongolia Region of China, has about 5,600 students from all over the world and a teaching staff of 300. Total:1 Page: 1
