Jimei University, approved by the Ministry of Education, is a key provincial multi-disciplined university which was combined into one from five individual institutes and colleges in Jimei Schools Village, namely, Jimei Navigation Institute, Xiamen Fisheries College, Fujian Physical Education College, Jimei Finance and Economics Institute, and Jimei Teachers College in October 1994.
Jimei University is located in Jimei Schools Village, the birthplace of a famous overseas Chinese patriotic leader Mr. Chen Jiageng (Mr. Tan Kah Kee ), in Xiamen Special Economic Zone(SEZ). It boasts beautiful scenery and a favorable climate. The splendid university campus, surrounded by clean waters and green mountains, attracts thousands of learners from every corner of the country. At present, Jimei University is made up of 20 colleges/institutes, namely, Navigation Institute, Marine Engineering Institute, Fisheries College, Bio-tech Engineering College, Physical Education College, Finance & Economics College, Teachers Education College, School of Business Administration, Art Education College, Information Technology College, Computer Science College, Mechanical Engineering College, College of Sciences, Foreign Languages College, Engineering Technology College, Professional Maritime Education College, Adult Education College, Overseas Education College, Chengyi College, School of Political Science and Law, School of Chinese Language and Literature. The University offers 19 master’s degree programs and 60 bachelor’s degree programs, covering eight areas: economics, law, pedagogy, literature, natural science, mechanical engineering, agronomy and business administration. Up to September 2008, Jimei University
has over 40,000 full-time students and over 2600 staff members, of which there are over 500 professors and associate professors. Jimei University covers an area of 2329 mu (nearly 135 hectares), with a floor space of 1 million square meters. Its library contains more than 2.7 million books.
Jimei University has gained the strong support and much attention from the Central Committee of the CPC and the State Council. Former President Jiang Zemin personally wrote the name of Jimei University and inscribed for the University “Enhance the patriotic spirit of Mr. Chen Jiageng and vitalize the Education of China”. Former premier Li Peng also presented some inscriptions to the university. Former vice-premier Li Lanqing cut the ribbon at the inauguration ceremony and has returned to the university on several occasions to give some suggestions on school reform and development. In September 1996, under the support of governments at all levels and people from all walks of life, the Jimei University Board was established. The chairman of CPPCC Mr. Jia Qinglin,is the consultant to the Board.The Secretary General of CPC of Fujian Province holds the post of honorary chairman of the Board and the Governor of Fujian Province is the chairman of the Board.
The motto of Jimei University is “Sincerity and Fortitude” which is the cherished spiritual inheritance left by the founder of Jimei Schools Village, Mr. Chen Jiageng. Jimei Schools Village, with a glorious history of 90 years, enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. Presently Jimei University has been conducting research on how it can meet the challenges of the 21st century. Its aim is to cultivate high quality education which will turn out personnel who can meet the growing needs of China.

1. Non-degree-conferring stude
nts
- a. Chinese Learning Students: Applicants can attend the class for advanced studies of Chinese language. (short-term class: 6 months at most; long-term class: over 6 months ). This class aims at improving the ability of Chinese communication and of taking Chinese language proficiency test (HSK). The major types of class and curriculum are listed as follow:
Elementary: pronunciation of Chinese language; elementary spoken Chinese; elementary listening comprehension; elementary reading and writing.
Intermediate: intermediate listening and speaking of Chinese language; intermediate reading; intermediate writing; intermediate intensive reading for Chinese language.
Advanced: advanced listening and speaking of Chinese language; advanced spoken Chinese; advanced writing; advanced intensive reading; Chinese newspapers-and-periodicals reading.
Elective Courses: training classes for the HSK; comparative cultural studies of China and foreign countries; contemporary Chinese grammar; Chinese lexicology; appreciation of Chinese classical poetry; Chinese history and geography; Chinese martial arts; Chinese calligraphy; Chinese music.
- b. Short-term Training Students: Applicants can attend all kinds of Chinese culture class (2 weeks to 6 months), so as to strengthen the students’ ability to express themselves orally in Chinese and their command of Chinese language and culture.
Class types: Chinese-learning class; Chinese language class for teachers training; Chinese painting class; Chinese martial arts class ;Chinese culture and tourism class; meanwhile other professional or comprehensive short-term classes can also be run at the request of applicants.
- c. Ordinary Upgrading Students: Students may choose from any of the 46 majors to enrol in Jimei University for upgrading studies. (Please refer to ‘colleges and majors of Jimei University ’for specified courses)
2. Degree-conferring students
- a. Undergraduate students (schooling length: 4 years)
Candidates may apply to enroll in any of the 46 majors with bachelor degree granted in Jimei University. They may also apply for the joint education program by Jimei University & Keuka College of the U.S. (Please refer to ‘Jimei University and Keuka College Joint Education Program’)
- b. Postgraduate (schooling length: 3 years)
Students may apply to enrol in majors with master degree granted.
- Those who apply to enrol in Elementary and Intermediate classes should provide the academic proof of completion of junior high school or above and hold a valid passport.
- Those who apply for undergraduate studies should provide the academic proof of completion of senior high school or above. For foreign applicants, the certificate of Chinese language proficiency test (HSK) is required (for Liberal Arts, an Intermediate Level C is needed; for Natural Science, an Elementary Level C). Besides, they should hold a valid passport.
- Those who apply for postgraduate studies must provide the academic proof of completion of undergraduate studies or above.Foreign applicants should obtain the certificate of Chinese language proficiency test (HSK). (for Liberal Arts, an Intermediate Level C is needed; for Natural Science,an Elementary Level C). Besides, they should hold a valid passport.
- Those who apply for package studies may directly discuss with the college on teaching contents, methods as well as expenses.

- School calendar: The academic year is divided into two semesters. The first semester begins from September and the second semester in mid-February or at the beginning of March. However, any applicant is also welcome to enrol at any time.
- Application for admission:
a.Applicants should fill out the application form and post it to the office of the college.
b.After having received the application form, the college will post both the JW202 Form and the Notification of Admission to students in about one month. Students may apply for a learning visa with the JW202 Form and the Notification of Admission at the local Chinese embassy or consulate.
c.Those who transfer to the college for study from other colleges or universities should transfer the residence permit at the local police station before registration.
d.After entering China, students should apply for relevant procedures like foreign residence permit and health examination, and so on. All these formalities will be handled by the college at the student’s expense and take about one week after the day of registration.

The dorm building for overseas students is on the main campus with beautiful surroundings and easy access. There is a canteen, a student recreation center and a shop inside the building. The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with such facilities as telephone, internet, TV set. There is a bathroom in every bedroom where hot water is available. In the laundry on each floor there are washing machines. Food expenses at the canteen is around RMB20-40yuan per person each day.
