An Introduction to Hainan Medical University

Hainan Medical University (HMU), under the auspices of the Hainan Provincial Government, was founded in 1993 with the approval of the Chinese State Education Commission. The history of the university began with the integration of two medical schools in 1951. In that year, the privately-owned Haiqiang Medical Vocational School (founded in 1947) and the privately-owned Medical University of Hainan University (founded in 1948) combined into a new school -- Hainan Specialized Medical School. Mr. Tse-ven Soong was its first General Director of the Board. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, this school developed into Hainan Medical Vocational School and later became the Medical Department of Hainan University. In 1994, Hainan Medical University was accredited to grant Bachelor’s Degrees and in 1996 was accredited for undergraduate education. In 2006, the university was again ranked by the State Ministry of Education as “favorable” in its undergraduate education program. Up to this time, more than 20,000 qualified medical workers have graduated from the university and have served the country and society.


Hainan Medical University has two campuses, one in Chengxi Road and another in Longhua Raod, with nearly 41 hectares of land.There are 2022 faculty among whom are 108 professors and 211 associate professors. The university consists of 15 schools and departments, e.g.School of Clinical Medicine,School of Vocational Education,School of International Education,School of Traditional Chinese Medicine,School of International Nursing,School of Dental Medicine,School of Pharmacy,School of Tropical Medicine and Laboratory Medicine,School of Public Health,School of Management,School of Basic Medicine,Department of Foreign Language, Department of Computer Information and Technology,Department of Sports, Department of Humanity and Social Science hosts.


There is one hospital directly affiliated with HMU, and three hospitals indirectly affiliated. The total number of beds in these four hospitals has been as high as 3722. HMU also has 32 other hospitals with an additional 14,076 beds and offers clinical instruction at these hospitals. Another 57 teaching facilities also offer their service to HMU.To date, HMU has enrolled over 10,000 Chinese students and more than 100 international students.


The university library,implementing electronic networks,is a member of CALIS and also a member of China’s Digital Library and the only library ranked by the Ministry of Health as “a consulting agency for sharing medical resources, public health and technology.” It has 718,000 volumes and 3,655 different journals. 


The publications of the university are as follows: Hainan Medical University Journal; The Hainan Medical University Newspaper; the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine (the only international journal on tropical medicine published in English Version in China).


The university now has 2 premier provincial labs,2 vital provincial medical courses and 4 vital provincial medical courses for the public health system. Since the university was founded, it has been granted 48 state-level research projects, including 2 programs from the “863 plan” of The Department of Science and Technology; 3 from the National Science & Technology Pillars Program and 43 Projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The university was awarded 51 provincial-level science and technology awards, including 4 first and 10 second prizes.

Programs

1.Medical Undergraduate Diploma

Medical courses: Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Dental Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing and so on. Students can get Graduation Certification after graduating from HMU and eligible students will be awarded Bachelor’s Degree Certificate.
Chinese language course: If an applicant has not passed required HSK Level, he/ she can study Chinese Language for one year at the School of International Education of our university. After passed the required HSK Level Test, he/ she can turn to medical professional study.

2. Chinese language and Culture Short-term Programs

In order to enhance the cultural communication between China and foreign countries, Hainan Medical University carries out short-term programs of different kinds for the international students all the year round. Warmly welcome delegations or groups of Universitys and universities, or institutions in any countries come to Hainan Medical University to participate into the study in short-term programs. We will adjust the curriculum to meet the group’s specific needs and time requirements. Short-term programs are combined with study and travelling, and the feature is health care, including oriental health care, TCM, acupuncture, qigong training class (a system of deep breathing exercises), shadowboxing, skinscraping (a popular treatment for sunstroke by scraping the patient's neck, chest or back), TCM cosmetology etc.

Guide for Recruitment

Entry requirements

The following are the requirements for international students applying for admission.

1.Candidates should be between 18 and 40 years old and in good health and behavior;
2.Abide by laws and regulations of People's Republic of China.
3.Medical Undergraduate Diploma: Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates for undergraduate programs should be capable of studying his/her medical courses in Chinese can apply for admission of undergraduate to Hainan Medical University. If he/she is not capable of studying his/her medical courses in Chinese, he/she ought to study Chinese for a period of time and must obtain the certificate of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK Band 3 or above), and then can resume his/her undergraduate studies. HSK Certificate of Level 6 is essential for hospital practice and internship.
4.HSK Certificate of Level 8 is essential for admission to Traditional Chinese Medicine Subject.
5.In addition, it is required that applicant should be capable with the basic English language.

Application documents

Contact the School of International Education of HMU directly for the documents. The applicant should submit the following documents:

1.Completed Application Form of Hainan Medical University (can be downloaded, photo is required);
2.Duplicated copies of highest certificate of schooling and academic record.

3.Copy of valid foreign passport.
4.Other supporting documents including HSK certificates and letters of recommendation, which will be given due consideration.
5.Application fee: RMB 400 (non-refundable; paid in cash) the application can be processed after this payment.

Note: Documents submitted will not be returned to the applicants, whether the application is successful or not.

Prior to June 30th per year for Autumn Semester;
Prior to December 30th per year for Spring Semester;
Chinese language course: the entire year except for legal holidays
Note: Send the completed application form and all the relevant documents as listed above together to the School of International Education (address below). Application documents should reach the School of International Education before the final application deadline.

1.All the courses are given in Chinese(or bilingual teaching with English).
2.All the matriculates shall register at the School of International Education on the date specified in the Admission Notice with the Admission Notice, JW202 Form, Physical Examination Record, Passport and 8 photos (2 x 1 inch, half-length, full-faced and bare-headed). Those who are two weeks overdue are considered abandoning the qualification on their own accord.
3.Matriculates are requested to pay tuition、registration、teaching materials, lodging and insurance fees to HMU directly for each year, which is essential for registration.

Note: No any recruitment agency is entitled to receive fees on behalf of HMU.


Procedures of Visa to China

The School of International Education of HMU will mail the matriculates “Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study in China” (JW202 Form) and the Admission Notice from HMU. Matriculates must take a physical examination no more than 4 months in advance at the hospital designated by the Chinese Embassy. With the Admission Notice, JW202 Form and Physical Examination Record, Matriculates can go to the nearest Chinese Embassy or Consulate for visa application (X Visa).

Expenses

International students are responsible for tuition and all other fees, including housing, medical care, meals, and any self-incurred miscellaneous expenses.

1.Application Fee: RMB 400
2.Tuition fee for Undergraduate Program: RMB 23000/year
3.Tuition fee for Chinese language: RMB 15000/year
4.Accommodation: RMB 5000-6000/year
5.Water and Electricity Fees: students shall be responsible for expenses of water and electricity consuming at hostels.

2.If students decide to transfer or withdraw, the paid fees will not be returned or transferred.
3.All the fees above are paid in RMB.

Note

1. Hainan Medical University specially provides the preferential tuition fees for the offspring of overseas Hainanese.
A. Undergraduate students pay the same tuition fee as Chinese students do.
B. Language students only pay 50% of the tuition fee approved by the Chinese government
2. Students should pay all the fees in cash at registration.
