Guangxi University of Technology

Guangxi University of Technology (GXUT) has been established with the state Council approval, anh is a regional university directly run by the government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The university was founded in 1958 in Nanning, and merged with Guangxi Light Industry College, Guangxi Mechanical Engineering College, and Guangxi Institute of Petrochemical Engineering in 1982. At the request of Liuzhou government, the campus was relocated to Liuzhou, the industrial base in Guangxi in 1985, and became the only university in the city.


GXUT focuses on engineering and enjoys a well-balanced development of multiple disciplines such as natural sciences, management, economics, liberal arts, law and pedagogy as well. The campus covers an area of more than 80 hectares with a building floor space of 417,600 square meters. Currently, it consists of 13 departments, 2 secondary colleges, 5 teaching sections, 1 independent college, and 18 research institutions/centers, offering 43 undergraduate programs. It started joint postgraduate programs with other universities in 2002 and was approved to grant 5 master degrees in February 2006. At present, the university is in preparation for 20 more postgraduate programs. The university enrolls students from 29 provinces and cities in China. Now the total number of registered students is 14,000, including 500 postgraduates.


GXUT has a staff of 1,200, including over 350 full professors and associate professors. 65.7% of teaching staff has been awarded master degrees and doctorates. Some are national excellent teachers/educational staff, who enjoy special government allowance, experts with outstanding contributions and Ph.D. supervisors. The team of “Design, Manufacture and Control Technology of Vehicle Engineering” is one of the first groups listed as innovation teams among Guangxi higher education institutions.


The university now has 1 MOE Engineering Research Center, 3 national characteristic specialty projects, and 2 key disciplines, 3 key developing disciplines, 2 key developing laboratories, 8 excellent specialties, 14 excellent courses, 2 teaching teams, 5 experimental teaching centers, and 2 key specialties at the provincial level. It was appointed as a national key training base for vocational teaching staff by MOE in 2000. In 2006, GXUT got good record in the evaluation for undergraduate program teaching organized by MOE.


GXUT has attached great importance to scientific research and shown great advantages. During the recent 5 years, GXUT has accomplished more than 940 research projects, which 10 of them are national programs such as “863”, natural science foundation, and so on. It has also completed over 50 scientific projects for Liuzhou and Guangxi. The university has published more than 4,300 academic papers among which over 220 were cited by SCI, EI, and ISTP. Nearly 20 patents/software copyrights and 60 awards have been granted. The average annual funding for scientific research and technical services reaches over 30 million RMB.


Relying on the needs of local economic and social development, GXUT has carried out research cooperation with enterprises. It has set up such research-development platforms as Biotechnology Incubator, Guangxi Engineering Machinery and Engineering Technology Research Center, Guangxi Pre-stressing Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center and Liuzhou Public Technology Promotion Center for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, which are co-built with Liuzhou Hi-tech Development Zone, Liuzhou Engineering Machinery Group, Liuzhou OVM Construction Machinery Group, and Liuzhou Economic Committee, etc. It cooperates with enterprises to establish Guangxi Engineering Research Center for Indium, Tin and Antimony and Guangxi Auto-body Electronic Engineering Technology research Center. The latter is a vice-chairman member of Guangxi Auto parts Alliance & Technology Transfer Alliance. The university has made joint application with enterprises for research programs at various levels, including National Spark Program and Torch Program, making great contributions to regional economic development.


The university has explored actively for new administration system. With the support of Party Committee and Government of Guangxi and Liuzhou, a board of trustees consisting of 13 large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises of Liuzhou such as Iron and Steel Group, Engineering Machinery Company, etc., was set up in 1994. It now has over 40 members and has strengthened the relationships between the university and the local government and enterprises in talent fostering and scientific research, which indicates the feature that the university develops in harmony with the local city while cooperating with enterprises.


GXUT has extensive international cooperation and exchanges. Currently, the university has established long-term cooperative relationships with about 20 universities/institutions in the USA, Germany, Japan, UK, Ireland, Vietnam, and so on, which improves its teaching quality and enhances its social influence.


GXUT attaches great importance to spiritual civilization and was named National Model Home of Staff, National “May 4” Red Flag Youth Corps Committee, Civilized Unit and Civilized Campus at the provincial level, and “Garden Campus” at the municipal level. It also has been awarded Student Social Practice Advanced Unit for 12 years.

Standing on a new historic horizon, GXUT has implemented a series of projects on teaching quality, staff and academic team development, scientific and research platform, faculty housing, and campus culture. In the spirit of innovation and scientific outlook, the university is promoting its development to serve the “Economic Upgrading and City Transformation” implemented by Liuzhou Government, the development of Beibu Gulf Economic Zone, and the industries in Guangxi. In addition, the university is accelerating its development in order to reach its goal to become comprehensive, with brilliant features and first class specialties in Guangxi during the 12th Five-Year National Development Plan.
