Zhangzhou Normal University

Zhangzhou Normal University is located in Zhangzhou,a well known city also called “The Sipsongpanna ( a famous tourist destination in China ) in the southern part of Fujian Province”. Lying on the other side of the Taiwan Straits, Zhangzhou borders the city of Xiamen. It is a famous ancestral home for many Fujian and Taiwan Overseas Chinese a lot of whom come back to trace their ancestral roots. With a subtropical monsoon climate, Zhangzhou enjoys beautiful scenery and fantastic living environment. With a long history, many historic figures and sites, the city is rich in tourism resources and customs. Because of the abundant resources, Zhangzhou has earned the reputation of “Land of Flowers, Fruits, Fish and Rice”. In Zhangzhou, you will be impressed by the local cuisine and the bars and restaurants of Western, Korean and Japanese style as well. Foreign teachers and businessmen here all think that our city is one pleasant to live in .

Zhangzhou Normal University is a national university which has gained great supports from the provincial government. It is also one of the universities with permission from the National Education Ministry to recruit overseas students. In the 2008 Undergraduate Education Evaluation, this university was rated “excellent” and has been on the list of institutions with rights of granting a master’s degree programs in Fujian province. Currently, the university offers 1 major of national characteristics, 5 majors of provincial characteristics, 6 experimental areas of talents training, 6 key institutes, 2 key laboratories and 1 human and social science base. We also have 16 colleges, 26 research institutions, 26 master-degree-granting stations, 50 undergraduate majors and over 25,000 students in the university. With well-qualified teachers and high-standard teaching quality, the university boasts of 936 full-time teachers, including 105 professors, 246 associate professors, 102 staff members with Ph.D degrees and 465 with master degrees.

With 1,574,000 copies of paper books and 1,288,000 electronic journals, the library and reference rooms in the university cover an area of 29,900 square meters. The university has a variety of books and journals in Mandarin and other languages, multi-functional classrooms, specialized laboratories and audio-visual laboratories with advanced ICT facilities. The gymnasium covers a total area of 95,000 square meters. The student dormitories are well facilitated. The facilities in the Computing Center and the Center of Internet and Educational Technologies are advanced. The broadband network covers the whole campus, which enables the university to be an ideal place for teaching and studying.

To promote cultural and educational communication and to promote the Chinese language and spread the regional culture of Min Nan (southern part of Fujian province), our university specially offers the programs of Chinese Language and Culture for overseas students who are interested in Chinese culture and those who want to facilitate their abilities of cultural exchange. The university now offers the major of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). With a lot of experience in operating schools and many excellent teachers, we have the ability to provide ideal learning and living environment for overseas students. Overseas friends and those from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are warmly welcome to our university to study and communicate with each other.

Chinese Language and Culture Programs

1. Mandarin
Major courses: Elementary Chinese, Chinese Linguistics, Listening, Writing, Translation, Literature, etc.

2. Chinese Culture (classes can be delivered in English if required)
Major courses: Chinese History, Traditional Chinese Philosophy, Calligraphy and Painting, Tai Chi, Martial Arts, Cultural Travel, Mental Arithmetic, Folk Culture, Tea Culture, Literature Appreciation, Poetry, Confucianism, Folk Music Appreciation, Paper Cutting, Puppet Show, etc.

3. Contemporary China(classes can be delivered in English if required)
Major courses: Social Structure in China, Education in China, Economic Growth in China, Foreign Trade in China, Chinese Law, Ethnic Minorities in China, etc.

4. Study of Min Nan Culture (classes can be delivered in English if required)
Major courses: Min Nan Folk Arts, Tulou (a kind of traditional earthen building in Fujian province), Relationship between Min Nan and Taiwan, Folk Beliefs, Folk Customs, Pedigree Roots, Hometown of Overseas Chinese and Their Migration to Southeast  Asia, etc.

 

Teaching Arrangements

Level 1: Elementary Chinese
The classes begin on the first day of every March, June, September and December. There will be 10-25 students in a class. (The commencement date and lesson content are negotiable if there are more than 10 students applying for admission as a group.) This period lasts from 1 to 3 months. (Students with good Chinese basis can skip to level 2 according to their learning development and personal demands.) At the first level, learners will have an intensive training on Chinese listening and speaking and they will have a general understanding of Chinese Culture, Contemporary China, Min Nan Culture and so on.

Level 2: Chinese Language Programs
After level 1, learners can choose one of the four programs of their interests. The duration is 3-10 months, focusing on studying courses in the programs.

Course Duration, Timetables and Teaching Methods

The duration of these non-degree-conferring programs is flexible from 1 month to 1 year. There are classes from Monday to Friday (except public holidays). Students will also take classes during the Chinese summer and winter vacations. Classes are mainly given in tutorials and lectures. But a variety of practices are involved during the semester which includes investigation, visit, association, experience and communication, etc. After-class tutorials can be provided on demand. Excursion and traveling will be organized during weekends or at the end of the semester.

After finishing the program, learners will get a certificate conferred by the Overseas Education College of Zhangzhou Normal University. If the students want to take part in the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), we can help the students to apply for it and offer further assistance. In the near future, we will offer overseas students degree-conferring programs for the further improvement of their Chinese.

Admissions Procedures

Application requirements

1. Foreign citizens, overseas Chinese and people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan with good health can apply if they meet the following conditions:
A. Applicants must be 15-65 years old.
B. Applicants must abide by the laws of the People’s Republic of China and the regulations of Zhangzhou Normal University.
C. Applicants must respect the regions and customs in mainland China

2. Schools and groups overseas can contact us so that programs can be tailored for individual groups accordingly.

3. Application procedures: applicants can contact the Foreign Affairs Office of the Overseas Education College for the “Application Form of Overseas Students”( It can be downloaded from the web page above). 4. Students who meet the requirements will receive the offers and other materials which are compulsory for applying visas within 30 days. Please bring in person the materials together with your passport (which must be valid at least 6 months before you finish the program) to the local Chinese embassy (or consulate) for a visa. Students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan must go through the current entry procedures. Students can apply the visiting visa (F visa) if the estimated study duration is within 6 months and they do not need to get the residence permit after arriving at Zhangzhou. If the study duration is over 6 months, student visa (X visa) must be applied, and we will assist you in getting a residence permit from the local police station within 2 weeks after arrival.

Tuition and other expenses

1.Accommodation and fees: :
International Academic Exchange Centre of Zhangzhou Normal University provides accommodation.
Standard Room: RMB150 per day (the room can be shared by two students).
The room is equipped with air-conditioner, cable television, water heater, internet access, and telephone etc.

2. Tuition fees: RMB1500 per month for each person.

3. Expenses on food: there are canteens offering both Chinese and Western food on campus. Usually the expense on food is about RMB30 per day.

4. Group investigation fees will be charged accordingly.

Part-time English Tutors wanted by Overseas Education College of Zhangzhou Normal University

Requirements:Overseas learners with bachelor’s degrees or above. Learners who are native English speakers and those who have certain teaching experience are preferred.

Tasks: This will be one-to-one or one-to-two tutorials. Students may be primary or middle school students or other English language lovers. The tutors’ task is to teach students British and American Culture and improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. Teaching activities last 3 hours every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 6 hours every Saturday and Sunday. The place could be at students’ home or on campus. Other activities to reinforce the learning can also be arranged, which include shopping, excursion, sporting and so on.

Accommodation:For the convenience of teaching, tutors are required to live in International Academic Exchange Centre of Zhangzhou Normal University. Standard rooms are offered. If you reach an agreement with the parents, you can choose homestay as well after reporting to the local police station.

Remuneration:Part-time English tutors will be paid RMB 5500 per month. (including the expenses on rent and food). If you live in a homestay family, the expenses on food and accommodation will be paid by the student’s parents. Therefore, the payment is reduced to RMB3, 000 accordingly.

Contract: The candidates have to meet the students or their parents who are interested under the arrangement of the Overseas Education College for bilateral agreements. Once the agreement has been reached, contract will be signed for a smooth cooperation.
