On May 30th, 2012, the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna invited its friends and anyone interested to a special concert "WuLanMuQi - The Mongolian Steppe Troupe". An ensemble from the Inner Mongolia enriched the cultural life of Vienna with its colorful performance. At 8pm Rose Song and Meng Tang, from the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna, happily bid their welcome to the large audience in the „Sargfabrik" in Vienna.

The audience was charmed by the colorful and lively performance of the 18-members of the ensemble. They introduced Inner Mongolia as the origin of the steppe nomadic culture and civilization. The vast land of Inner Mongolia is like a musical cradle and is crucial to the artistic talent of the people. The cultural life such as music and dance reflects the touch with nature of the people, as well as their great respect for their environment. Long passionate tones and lively and rhythmic dances are a characteristic of the Mongolian music.

The concert was opened with the dance „Oh, vast and fertile Alxa", which portrays the beautiful desert landscape, the charm of Mount Helan, the mysterious Xixia and the Gobi Desert. The audience was excited with dances such as "Sawaerdeng", a Mongolian dance with lively movements which mirrors pleasure and desires of young Mongolians about life in the desert, and chants such as "Ode to Genghis Khan", which shows the desire of Mongolian children and young people for love and a better future. "Hoomei", an ancient Mongolian singing technique, and traditional Mongolian horse head fiddles gave the audience an authentic picture of the Mongolian culture. After each performance the audience acknowledged the ensemble with thunderous applause. The Mongolian folk dance "The love for Mongolia" was particularly charming as the performers danced with bowls on their heads and Zhukuai (bamboo sticks) in their hands.

During the last performance "The Infinity of the Mongolian Steppe" the artists offered their good wishes in their colorful robes to the audience and gave away scarves as presents. This is a Mongolian symbol of respect and friendship. The ensemble and the two charming hosts received a tremendous applause.

On May 31st, 2012 the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna invited the artistic ensemble WuLanMuQi to perform at the Geriatriezentrum Favoriten, which is a retirement home in Vienna. Many of the 192 residents gathered in the ballroom to enjoy a colorful and lively performance.

Especially for the old people the WuLanMuQi Ensemble chose their best performances for a special program. Like the day before, the artists offered during the last performance "The Infinity of the Mongolian Steppe" scarves and presents to the audience.

„I would have never thought that I may enjoy such a great concert in my lifetime", a 100-year-old pensioner beamed. Thus, the residents enjoyed a colorful and exciting afternoon with the „Steppe Pearl".

The "WuLanMuQi Ensemble" from the grassland was founded in the 50s. The artists are mainly members of farming and herding families. The group travels through the steppes and gives more than 200 concerts a year. The Ensemble enjoys great popularity among the shepherds, who refer to it as „Prairie Pearl".
