China Scholarship System

Generally, Chinese Scholarship System can be divided into six types, namely, Chinese government scholarship, Confucius Institute scholarship, Chinese Bridge Scholarship, Local government scholarship, university scholarship and enterprise scholarship.

We will introduce four common scholarships:

Chinese government scholarship
1. Scholarship Category
i.Chinese Government Scholarship Program (scholarship quota specified according to inter-governmental agreements)
ii.CHINA/UNESCO - the Great Wall Fellowship Program
iii.Study in Asia Scholarship Program
iv. China/AUN Scholarship Program
v. Chinese Government Scholarship Program for EU
vi. China/Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Scholarship Program
vii. China/Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Scholarship Program.
viii. Chinese Government Special Scholarship Program-University Postgraduate Program 
ix. Chinese Government Special Scholarship Program-Degree Oriented Program in Provinces and Autonomous Regions
x. Chinese Government Special Scholarship Program-Cooperative Program with Provinces and Autonomous Regions
xi. Distinguished International Students Scholarship Program

2. Time for Application
The application period for the Chinese Government Scholarship Program is from January to April, 2011. Applicants shall consult the dispatching authorities about details on the application period and procedures.
As for Chinese Government Special Scholarship Program-University Postgraduate Program, Degree Oriented Program in Provinces and Autonomous Regions, and Cooperative Program with Provinces and Autonomous Regions , applicants shall contact the Chinese HEIs under these programs for the deadlines for application.

3. Application Mode
Applicants shall meet the basic qualifications. Applicants shall fill in and submit the application form online first and then submit the printed version and the supporting documents required by CSC to the dispatching authorities.
The CSC Online Application System for Study in China is available on http://laihua.csc.edu.cn
Those who cannot apply online shall ask their dispatching authorities for the application form and submit the documents to the dispatching authorities.

Confucius Institute scholarship
1.Scholarship Category
According to different types of programs, the Scholarship is divided into 3 categories, namely, Scholarships for Four-Week Study, Scholarships for One-Academic Year Study and Scholarships for a Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages.

2. Application Mode
From the issue date of the application procedures, applicants can log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, complete the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application form online, print out the form and sign it; then submit it to one of the recommended institutes along with the other application materials.

The following recommended institutes will select the best applicants and recommend them to the host institutes.

Confucius Institutes;
Related colleges and universities in countries with no Confucius Institutes established;
Education and culture offices (sections) of Chinese embassies (consulates) worldwide;
Host institutes for Master's Degree in MTCSOL.

Local Government Scholarships
11 Chinese provincial and municipal governments(namely Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Zhejiang, Hubei, Guangxi, Yunnan, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Dalian, Jiangsu) have established scholarship funds for foreign students and scholars.

Application Time
Generally, applications are accepted once a year and they shall be submitted from January to April every year.

Scholarship Rates
The value of scholarships varies from place to place, as decided by the local government. Typically, the scholarship covers: registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, fee for basic learning materials, accommodation fee, fee for comprehensive insurance, basic living allowance, supervisor allowance, and so on.

Application Materials
Referring to the application procedures, candidates should provide the required application materials truly and correctly. Not all the universities require the same documents.

Selection of Institutions and Specialties
Applicants can choose institutions and specialties from the Chinese institutions of higher education in the specific region.

Approval and Notification
Application materials will be reviewed by the institutions of higher education and the local government scholarship office. The institutions will send the Scholarship Letter, the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for study in China to the applicants who will be officially confirmed as scholarship students three months before the opening of the new academic year.

Chinese Universities Scholarships
Application Time
The application deadline differs depending on the type of scholarship. In most cases, students who intend to apply for scholarships such as "Freshmen Scholarship", "Degree Scholarship" and "President Scholarship" should submit application materials directly to the scholarship office of the university at least three months before the beginning of each new school year. Other scholarships such as the "Outstanding Scholarship", "OEC Chinese Scholarship" and "Yiersan Chinese Culture Scholarship", will be awarded during the period of study at the university on the basis of students' performance.

Application Materials
Generally, students should submit the Application Form for Scholarship specified by the university. A photocopy of passport, passport sized photo, notarized copy of highest diploma and other related materials will be required to submit with the application.
Application Procedures

Students can directly apply to the university and submit your application materials. The admission office in charge of scholarships will comprehensively evaluate profiles and the qualified students will be approved by the leading group of the scholarship office.

Approval and Notification
The admissions office is responsible for reviewing the application materials. The office publishes the list of successful candidates on the university official website and forwards the Admission Notice to those accepted.
