With the purpose of attracting foreign students and scholars to pursue academic study and research in Chongqing, improving the teaching quality, and extending Chongqing's international influence in education, Chongqing Municipal Government has established Mayor's Scholarship for Foreign Students (shortened as Mayor's Scholarship).

1. Categories of Applicants and Duration of Scholarship

Foreigners who wish to study in Chongqing's Universities can apply for the scholarship, including undergraduates, master's degree candidates, doctoral degree candidates, Chinese language candidates, general advanced candidates and senior advanced candidates.

2. Application procedures, timing

1) Foreigners who wish to study in Chongqing's Universities are entitled to submit application directly to the institutions by email or by post by fax, or through the office of foreign affairs or overseas Chinese affairs office submitting your application materials.

2) The first category candidates should submit the application documents before March 30th each year, and the deadline is April 30th each year recommended to mayor office by the university. The second category candidates should submit the application documents before September 20th each year, and the deadline is October 10th each year recommended to mayor office by the university.

3. Eligibility

1) Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and in good health.

2) Following candidates can apply for Mayor's Scholarship

Overseas who intend to study more than one year in Chongqing's universities, be eligible for entry requirements and aged under 40 years old. Those who apply for senior advanced study should hold the position of associated professor or above. (The first category for short)
Excellent international students are studying in Chongqing's universities who should love Chongqing, good study performance and well behaved. (The second category for short)
4. Scholarship Rates

The scholarship for first category is classified into Full scholarship and Non-full scholarship.

The full scholarship

Including fees of tuition, basic study materials, accommodation, living expenses, outpatient medical service, comprehensive insurance, one-time relocation living and one-time transportation fares between cities. The standard is RMB 45,000 per year for doctoral candidates, RMB 35,000 per year for master's degree candidates, RMB 25,000 per year for undergraduates, For general scholars without professor title, the fund standard is the same with master's degree candidates; for senior scholars with professor title, the fund standard is the same with doctoral degree candidates. For those who study for 6 months, the fund standard is as above, but the provide duration is half a year.

The living expenses, outpatient medical service, comprehensive insurance, one-time relocation living and one-time transportation fares between cities are granted by the related university.

The standard is:

For undergraduates, Chinese language candidates: RMB 1000 per month;
For master and general advanced candidates: RMB 1100 per month;
For doctor and senior advanced candidates: RMB 1300 per month;
The year is calculated by 10 months in total (same as following).

Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution's hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institution.

Comprehensive insurance is the comprehensive medical insurance premium insured for scholarship candidates. The medical expense of students being in hospital for serious illness or suffering accidental injury, the university can ask for insurance compensation payouts to the related insurance company taking along with the expense receipt.

After arriving at Chongqing, candidates can receive one-time relocation living fee RMB 600.

International travel fare is on the students' own charge. Provide one-time transportation fares between cities for students coming and leaving China: From the entering/exiting port to Chongqing, the train hard ticket will be provided by the university. The board expenses, excess baggage revenue would be charged by yourselves.

Non-full Scholarship

One-time rewarding fund, the standard is RMB 15,000 per year, used for tuition, board and lodging expenses, etc. After studying in the university, it will be granted by month from the university.

The scholarship for second category is classified into Full scholarship and Non-full scholarship.

Full scholarship

The scholarship rate is RMB 45,000 per year for doctor, RMB 35,000 per year for master, RMB 25,000 per year for undergraduate. The funds are RMB 16,000 per year for doctor, RMB 14,000 per year, RMB 12,000 per year, it will be provided by month to the students by each university. The remainder will be used for tuition, textbooks, basic study materials, accommodation, outpatient medical service, comprehensive medical insurance premiums. Meanwhile, the winners are exempted the above fees.

Non-full scholarship

One-time financial aid, the standard is RMB 15,000 per year, used for tuition, board and lodging expenses, handed out by month by the university.

5. Application Materials

For the first category (all documents should be in duplicate)

1) Application Form for Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor Scholarshipof the original and photocopy of each one in English or Chinese.

2) Current study certificate/ current work proof by your university/organization. Only Chinese version or English version is acceptable. Version in other language should be attached with the notarized translated version in Chinese or English.

3) Transcripts for students, academic achievement for scholars. Only Chinese version or English version is acceptable. Version in other language should be attached with the notarized translated version in Chinese or English.

4) Study plan in China for students, research plan for scholars, should be in Chinese or English.

5) Recommendation letters from two professors or associated professors, in Chinese or English version.

6) Those who apply for music major should provide the CDs of your personal art; those who apply for fine arts major should provide the work CDs (2 pencil sketch, 2 pastel, 2 other works)

7) Copy of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners in English version. Applicants should strictly according to the items of the record. All sections of this application must be completed, otherwise the record will be regarded as useless. Such as without personal picture, sealless on the perforation, no signature by the doctor and hospital. The valid of the examination record is 6 months, please reasonably arrange your time.

Application materials will not be returned regardless of the result of application.

For the second category (all documents should be in duplicate)

Applicants should submit the Application Form for Chongqing Municipal Government Mayor Scholarship to the university. And the university need to submit the following materials to the Chongqing's Education Committee

1) Application letter

2) Application Form for International Students Rewarding Chongqing's People Government Mayor's Scholarship for the applicant.

6. Selection of Institutions and Specialties

Applicants may choose institutions and specialties from the Chinese institutions of higher education in the Chongqing region. Please check the details or submit the application forms to the institutions directly.

The first category candidates can choose two academic programs and two institutions as their preferences from Chongqing regions. If necessary, please submit additional study or research plan.

7. Approvals and Notification

For the first category

1) The Chongqing mayor's scholarship office will review all the application materials and have the authority to readjust the intuitions and specialties. The application materials will be forwarded to the institutions to decide being accepted or not. If the application materials fail to satisfy the prescribed requirements, the application will be regarded useless.

2) We encourage that the applicants to contact the teacher or director in advance. If there is letter of invitation, please enclose with application documents.

3) Applicants who are admitted by the university can come to study in Chongqing after approval by Chongqing Mayor's Scholarship Office.

4) In principle, the definite institution and program in the Admission Notice cannot change after arriving in Chongqing.

5) The admission name list, admission notice and visa application form for international students (JW201 sheet) will post to the applicant by Chongqing mayor's scholarship office before July 31st each year.

For the second category

After first reviewing by the university, Chongqing Education Committee will approve, the applicant will receive the notice from the university before December 30th each year.
