Currently, about 60% of foreign students in China are learning Chinese. The educational system is very flexible and offers short-term courses of several months or weeks, as well as a four-year academic undergraduate program. Chinese universities also offer different levels of courses in either Chinese or bilingual formats.

Most foreign students learn Chinese in universities. At present, more than 300 post secondary institutions help foreign students learn Chinese.

China now offers the HSK test. It's considered the equivalent of the Chinese Tofel and has several categories to test the Chinese level of students. This test can be taken in 28 other countries besides China.
