Two staple foods prominent in Bai Lu regimen

Bai Lu, also called White Dew is one of the 24 solar terms in Chinese lunar calendar. Since the beginning of Bai Lu, the weather becomes crisp in the morning and evening so that human consume more energy to keep warm. Therefore, two nourishing staple foods are highly recommended.

Sweet potato is the top of the anti-cancer vegetables.

Considering fiber content, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium, the sweet potato ranked highest in nutritional value. Besides simple starches, sweet potatoes are rich in dietary fiber, which helps relieve the digestive system, enhance intestinal peristalsis. It has obvious efficacies on constipation and it helps reduce colorectal cancer. Besides, carotene, vitamin C and folic acid in sweet potatoes are regarded as top three anti-cancer nutrients,

Although the leaves and shoots are also edible, the starchy tuberous roots are by far the most important food. Steamed, boiled, fried, sauted and baked sweet potatoes can be commonly seen in Chinese cuisine. In China, sweet potatoes, typically of the yellow variety, are baked in a large iron drum, and sold as street food during winter.

Sweet potato is staple food in some area of China. It also has purple and yellow varieties. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), sweet potatoes are sweet and mild in nature that is helpful to nourish spleen and Qi. Modern medicine considers the myxoid material in sweet potato as lubrication to respiratory tract, digestive tract and joint cavity.

Sweet potato is very low in fat and calories. Taking sweet potatoes in moderation helps keeping fit while too much a time may cause heartburn and regurgitation of sourness.

Millets are stomach-friendly food.

Millets or Xiao mi in Putonghua has the longest history of cultivation among the staple foods, having been grown in China since sometime in the sixth millennium BC. Millets are sweet and cool in nature. Millets are believed nourishing spleen and stomach TCM. Modern science regards millet as a kind of nutritious grain. It is rich in vitamin B1 and B2 as well as carotene which are good for humans digestive system. Millets gruel is served for breakfast or dinner in many Chinese families at this point.
