China Musician--Fucong

Fu Cong was born in March, 1934. He was born to be an artist. His father, Fu Lei, is a famous scholar, art theorist and translator. When Fu Cong was four years old, he had already shown his special love towards music since he was deeply attracted to musical sounds. And three years later he began to learn piano playing from Mario Paci, who is also an Italian conductor and the student of Liszt's apprentice.  Three years later, Ada Bronstein who is from the former USSR became his new teacher.

In 1953, the Fourth World Youth Gathering Festival was held in Romania. Fu Cong attended the final competition of piano playing as the only candidate from China, winning the third place. It is said that the candidate from the Soviet Union was moved to tears by his performance.

On March 1955, the fifth Chopin international piano competition was held in Warsaw. There were 74 players all around the world attending the competition. Fu Cong was the one who is considered to have the weakest background. But after three round competition, Fu Cong finally won the third place by his performance of Mazuka and his score was quite close to the second and first.  Though he was not the champion, his charm has impressed people a lot.

After the competition, Fu Cong stayed in Poland to continue his piano study until he graduated in advance in 1958. Among this period he used to have a holiday back in China and held his solo concert in Beijing and in Shanghai he cooperated with Shanghai Symphony to perform in Concert of Monzart concertos. And on December 1958, Fu Cong left Poland and moved to England.

In the two decades between 1960s and 1980s, Fu Cong has held about 2400 solo concerts. He had cooperated with several famous conductors such as Menuhin, Barenboim and Chung, Kyung-Wha. He has recorded about 50 records; and he has been the judge of a lot of piano competitions including Chopin international piano competitions, Emperess Elizabeth international music competition, and some competitions in Norway, Italy, Swiss, Portugal and the countries in Southeast Asia. And he traveled around the world to perform for people. He was considered the valueable master by his efforts and the Time Magazine entitled him as the greatest Chinese Musician alive.

In 1976, Fu Cong came back to China and held his solo concert at China Central Conservatory. And after that he came back to his motherland to perform and teach every year. Until now he has already been to Beijing Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu and Kunming. He gives lectures on Chopin, Mozart Debusy and some other musicians, and also perform the works of these musician and some other masterworks from Schubert and so on. He cooperated with Central philharmonic to play the concertos of Beethoven and with the philharmonic of the students in China Central Conservatory he played the works from Mozart. And it is interesting that he was also the conductor of the concert.  And he has specially tutored the training of the indoor music group of Affiliated Middle School of China Central Music Conservatory. Music fans, teachers and student respect him because of his rich experience and earnest attitudes.
