China Musician--Sheng Zhongguo

Chinese violinist, Sheng Zhongguo has the respect of the leaders in the music field. They praise him as an outstanding musician and the most charming violinist in China.

As the national level soloist of China National Symphony Orchestra, Sheng Zhongguo is one of the earliest soloists to earn great honor for China in the international arena.

Sheng Zhongguo was born into a musical family. His father, Sheng Xue, was a violin professor, and his mother, Zhu Bing was a singer. They raised 11 children, among whom 10 majored in music, nine played violin. In 1941, Sheng Zhongguo came into the world and he was the first child of this family. During that period, like every Chinese, what Sheng's father hoped most was China could be strong, prosperous and not be bullied by others. Consequently, he named his son Sheng Zhongguo, which could be literally translated as the prosperous China.

Sheng Zhongguo studied violin with his father starting at age 5, and then 2 years later, he performed on stage for the first time. On his 9th birthday, Wu Han Radio broadcast the program Sheng Zhongguo recorded, which fascinated listeners causing them to call him "the talented violin boy". At the concert celebrating the 200th birthday of Mozart in 1956 Sheng Zhongguo succeeded in playing Mozart's work: Concerto in A major with the Central Symphony Orchestra. In the same year, he participated in the National Music Week. In the show, he played with the Central Conservatory of Music and played Ma Sicong's work: Violin concerto, F Major.  He soon gained the recognition of many in the music field.

In 1960, Sheng Zhongguo was selected for further education at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music in Moscow, being taught by world famous violinist, Leonid Kogan. There  he participated in the Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition and was awarded the Honorable Prize. As a result, he became one of the earliest violinists to gain prizes in the cosmopolitan music competition of New China. In 1963, he cooperated with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to hold a Concerto Concert together, which was the first concert of this type in Chinese violin playing history.

Returning to China in 1964, Sheng Zhongguo continued to be active in the domestic and overseas music worlds. Though he couldn't hold any concerts during the Cultural Revolution, he never stopped pursuing music. After 1976, he made amazing efforts to make up for the missing years. He held more than 100 concerts every year around the world, thus, he became one of the most popular violinists of his time.

In the early 80s, Sheng Zhongguo held a great number of concerts around the world. In 1980, he held 12 concerts in six cities of Australia. The show stirred the whole of Australia, which was a milestone in the history of Sino-Australia cultural communication.

Since 1987, Sheng Zhongguo has performed musical shows in Japan every year, and he would donate some money to the students studying abroad from all over the world as medical funds. The Japanese government awarded him the title "cultural ambassador". Due to his outstanding contributions on the Sino-Japan cultural communication, the Japanese government named him "eternal affairs minister".

Sheng Zhongguo signed a lot of playing contracts with foreign countries, and his performances made great contributions to promoting the world cultural communication. At the same time, he often made speeches at Chinese universities, playing a positive role in enhancing the development of a Chinese music career.

Now, he holds the posts of the commissioner of the National Committee, the commissioner of Dem-League, the director of Chinese Musicians Association, the director of China Symphony Development Foundation, and the commissioner of Performing Arts Committee, etc.
