Tian Han was the founder of China's drama campaign, the forthgoer of drama reform, and was called "modern Guan Hanqing". He not only wrote plays and dramas, but also wrote movie scripts, poems, and incidental music of movies. Tian Han is regarded as both famous playwright and poet.

Tian Han was born on March 12th, 1898, in Changsha, Hunan province. After "May 4th campaign", he devoted to the anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism "new culture campaign". In 1920's, he organized "society of the south", which used to play an important role in Chinese modern history of art. At that time, the plays he wrote, such as One Night in Cafe, the Death of an Outstanding Actor, were like the amazing flowers blooming in the desert of Chinese plays. In 1932, Tian Han joined the Communist Party of China. Then it came the second climax of his writing. He became one of the major forces of left-wing dramas and movies. He not only wrote a number of plays, but also wrote many movie scripts, such as Three Modern Women, the Light of Motherhood, etc. His opera, the Strom of Yangtze River, reflecting the struggle life of Shanghai docker, was one of the earliest revolutionary operas in China. Tian Han also composed a lot of encouraging and influential lyrics for many plays and movie music, in which March of Militia impressed millions of people. It encouraged Chinese people to struggle for the liberation of their motherland. After the founding of new China, this song was chosen as national anthem.

After the founding of new China, Tian Han didn't stop writing even if he was in the post of leadership. He wrote Guan Hanqing in order to express his respect for this ancient playwright who was brave enough to argue for Ms Dou's justice. What was totally out of his expectation was that he himself was persecuted by "the group of four" for writing Xie Yaohuan. In 1968, Tian Han disappeared after endless torture of being criticized and beaten. He never left a word to anybody. Even his bone ashes couldn't be found. Ten years later, his was finally exonerated.

During his life, Tian Han wrong a good number of works. According to statistics, he wrote more than 60 plays, over 20 dramas, 10 movie scripts, and more than 900 poems. There are also many excellent lyrics, essays, novels, and translated works. Tian Han's contribution to Chinese dramas and poems cannot be obliterated, and his name will be stamped in the history of China modern dramas and poems.
