The Penglai Pavilion is situated on the seashore cliff at the north of Penglai City, Yantai of Shandong Province. It is one of the four famous ancient towers in China. It was first constructed in 1070 of the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

It is said that the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC) heard that a sort of pills of immortality were made here and immortals appeared here too during the 3rdcentury BC. In order to look for these so-called pills of immortality, the emperor then ordered Xu Fu to lead many young people to go to the place. Subsequently, Taoism of China regarded the place as the Holy Land. The imperial courts of the past dynasties established many Taoist temples here successively, and the Penglai Pavilion is one of them.

The Penglai Pavilion is a two-storied wooden pavilion with a double-eaves roof. The first floor is some pictures from both domestic and apoad countries while the second floor is the sculpture of the eight immortals. It's said that after eight immortals got drunk in this pavilion, they started crossing the sea. In order to show their power, they refused to use ships but took out their magic weapons instead. Here comes the idiom, that the Eight Immortals Showing Their Own Magic Power when Crossing the Sea, which means to show their own abilities. The sculpture is so vividly that tourists prefer to take pictures here.

The Penglai Pavilion is the best place to view two of the Ten Scenes of Penglai Pavilion in the Air and Fishing and Singing on Yuliang. The Pavilion high up in the air casts its invert reflection in the blue sea. with mist wrapping up the mountainside ring upon ring. It is just like a fantastic mirage written in water.
